As Malcolm Lobban, KES Old Boy, Class of 1972, and co-architect of this programme, puts it:
"The unemployment crisis in our country continues to have a devastating effect on a large and growing portion of South Africa's population. This new focus on internships is aimed at providing a number of hand-picked youngsters with immediate access to the formal economy. We aim to place the individuals within organisations where they will benefit from the mentorship experience, the assimilation of tangible and practical skills and an opportunity to demonstrate their character. The collective impact of the internship period will hopefully open the door for each and every one of them and materially improve their chances of securing some form of sustainable income in the future ."
